Our History

The Little Red Playschool was founded in the 1980s as a play-based early childhood program for two- and three-year-olds. From the beginning, the school was built around a simple belief: young children learn best through play.

For decades, Little Red has provided a warm, nurturing environment where children can explore, create, and grow at their own pace. The program was designed to support the whole child, placing equal importance on social, physical, emotional, and intellectual development. Generations of families have experienced Little Red as a place where curiosity is encouraged, friendships are formed, and learning unfolds naturally through joyful discovery.

Our Philosophy

At Little Red Playschool, we believe that play is the work of young children. Play is messy, unpredictable, spontaneous, freewheeling, and sometimes even a little scary—in other words, play is a lot like life.

Through play, children practice choosing, doing, and problem solving. They experiment with ideas, negotiate with friends, take risks, and imagine new possibilities. In their make-believe worlds, children develop physical, social, and cognitive skills as they explore experiences that feel real and meaningful to them.

Our teachers support this process by creating rich environments filled with open-ended materials and opportunities for exploration. They observe closely, follow children’s interests, and step in when needed to guide, support, and celebrate each child’s discoveries.

For more than 40 years, this play-centered approach has remained at the heart of Little Red Playschool.

“Miss Barbara’s school was my favorite school ever and I didn’t want to leave there. I loved playing with the kitchen and the babies the best.”
— Aden, now 7 years old
The years our children spent at the Little Red Playschool were filled with warmth, comfort, self-discovery, friendship and, most of all, joy. The cocoon of safe, loving acceptance that Barbara provided validated their intrinsic sense of self-worth that has remained with them throughout their childhood, teenage and young adult years. We are truly grateful to Barbara and her extraordinary school for helping us to launch our children into the “outside” world in such a profoundly wonderfull way.
